Emily's First Day of School!

on a lighter note...
Emily, on the other hand, has thrown herself into swimming. She loves doing all the things she is asked to and will do it and much more. She cannot keep still in the water for a second, she is so excited to be there.
Poor Calvin is forced to sit and watch from the sidelines. He so desperately wants to swim! He hasn't thrown any major fits as we retreat up the stairs to the bleachers, for which I am thankful. I think he has enoyed the one-on-one time with me a bit too. We have been reading and coloring and eating chocolate, while I am trying to watch the girls at the same time. Lately he's discovered the drinking fountain, which he thinks is pretty cool. I have my doubts as to how much actually ends up in his mouth, but he's trying. Every five minutes, if he could. Here's a picture of him after an ice cream cone. You'd think I would have learned not to give the kid chocolate... but the pictures are always good for memories.Books and a soap box episode
So the book made me think, and made me mad. Overall, I would not recommend it. Not conducive to a good night's sleep.

birthdays, piggyback and ring around the rosie

Here's the crew partaking of the goodies. Matt was here too, but he was in the other room on the phone when I decided to get out the camera. Sorry Matt! And all bets are off at the dinner table (well, ours, anyway): you leave ice cream unattended long enough and it will disappear one way or the other! Thanks guys for coming up, it was really fun.

Kimmie and Calvin both thought the cake was pretty darn good. Funny how not hungry they are during dinner. Then you pull out the cake and all of the sudden those kids are starved!

And here's a series of photo of piggybacks. I came in the room and Calvin was giving Kimmie a piggyback around the room, trying his hardest to actually move with her on top of him (which is actually not as hard as it seems since he weighs nearly the same as she does, notwithstanding the six inches she has on him!). So I pulled out the camera and they all showed their amazing piggybacking skills.
In other news, the girls started swim lessons today and were very excited. And of course I forgot the camera. Emily was so excited she could hardly stay still in the water, it was so funny to watch. Kimmie was not at all sure of things and had to be convinced to do everything, though she did it eventually. She can be such a daredevil if she's sure of herself, but if not, it's really hard to get her to try. She zips around better than Em on a bike, but in the swimming pool she's pretty timid. Calvin was dying to get in the water with them but sadly, not allowed. I'm going to have to find someone to watch him during their lessons or find something really creative to do or he's going to go crazy by the end of the week. I'll take him to the open swim session on Friday though, and hopefully that will make it up to him. Anyway, I'll remember the camera tomorrow!

happy Fourth of July

This picture is from Sunday night dinner. Notice the Trivial pursuit game. Gary and Richard were obliging and let me trounce them at this game again. I think they use it as insurance so I will continue to play other games with them, knowing that they can beat me at everything else! I've gotten so I refuse to play any kind of economic or strategic game with them--there's just no point. I already know the outcome! If luck is involved, then I at least have a sporting chance, albeit a small one. These boys are just too smart for their own good. I think playing Trivial Pursuit is good for them. :) Okay, it's not too bad for my ego either. ;) Thanks guys.

weird weather

Just for fun, here's a video of me trying to get Calvin talking. It sort of worked. You get an idea of how he's doing, but he's never been one to perform on demand. He's actually quite the conversationalist. He's pretty physically adept as well. I wish I had a video of him yesterday riding a scooter down the driveway and the sidewalk. He's not even two yet! (Okay, he's only got a couple months left, but still!) His latest thing is jumping off couches and chairs, and he lands on his feet! This one's definitely going to keep me busy.

yesterday
I do have to gripe about the grocery store I went to. I have resolved to never go back there again. Picture me with three kids (the youngest hungry and tired) in one of those stupid car-carts that are impossible to steer but you get anyway hoping it will keep the kids quiet for a little longer, pushing down the narrow aisles of a grocery store in the middle of Colorado liberal central. The store is right off CSU campus so there are few, if any, kids in the whole store, and lots of people toting their reusable grocery bags and driving cars plastered with Obama stickers. Can you imagine the looks I got??? I swear, if I hear the phrase, "Wow, you've got your hands full!" one more time... and those were the friendly ones. Then there were the looks of polite incredulety, open amazement, and frank scowls--until they realized I was looking right at them, then they'd paste on a smile. From now on, I'll go to the one down south if I need to go to that store--it's bigger, closer to the family neighborhoods, so there are actually other kids in the store. I still get some looks, but more of them are friendly and a couple are actually understanding. Or maybe I should just start grocery shopping at night when I can leave the kids home. I'm still staying away from that store though.
Emily and friends

Over the weekend Emily got a new haircut. She has been chewing on her hair which drove me crazy and I kept threatening to cut it, and nothing got better so I finally chopped it off. She actually likes it, and so do I. She looks a lot older to me, and there's no soggy tangles to comb through, so I'm happy!

Also, Emily is quite the budding artist, I think, so I'm posting some of her artwork. Here is the card she drew for her grandma's birthday (her dad wrote the message out for her, then she copied it onto her card), the artwork is all her own. She's gotten pretty good at those flowers! And notice the chocolate layer cake down at the bottom. I show her how to draw things once, and then she takes them and gets creative.
This is one of the pictures Emily has been bringing home from church every week. This is of Moroni giving the gold plates to Joseph Smith. A while ago she drew one of the First Vision which I am sorry to say got lost before we could get a picture of it. It was a full page production similar to the painting I'm sure was shown in class, with red fire all around them. I am kicking myself for not snapping a picture of it.

So there's my update on Emily. I am trying to tell myself I'm not showing off, but as an unofficial artist myself it is fun to see her abilities growing. So scratch it off as maternal pride, and a record for the family. Then maybe I'll feel less guilty. :) Tuesday, June 2, 2009
kitchen progression

Here it is set up in the kitchen! Minus the control dials, they were still drying. You can see the scratched off paint on the oven drawer and the door handle, but a little silver paint will fix that, when we get to it. We got this thing set up and were amazed at how different the kitchen looked. Thank goodness that 70s monstrosity is gone! Well, it's in the garage.. we're still trying to get rid of it. Anyone want it? :)
And a functional laundry! No closet doors, and it's right off the kitchen which I am not sure about, but it's working out so far. There are shelves painted white set up in it now, but I don't have a picture.
So there it is. I think that's about where we are at on the house. It has been a lot of work and I will put on record that I have done the kitchen painting almost single-handedly. Not that John hasn't had plenty of his own to do, but it was my idea and I did it! (Am doing it, I guess) Though John has said he would help with spraying the paint on the doors. We made a project list last night and even unfinished it's pretty long, so we still have lots to do, but it's coming along!!
house update, specifically
phase 1, mid-painting
phase 1, painted and toys to keep kids busy while I painted!Monday, June 1, 2009
general update, specifics later
First and foremost, we've been in our new house now for about three weeks. We have a phone and internet (hence the post) and are feeling a little more settled each day. Though my penchant for painting has been drastically reduced since we've moved in, so the day when things actually are done may get further and further away. Still, we are enjoying having our own place and having Calvin sleeping through the night and in a different room than us, and the kids are loving having all their toys back and daddy is loving the inherent mess (NOT). I will post more detailed pics about the house and its progress later, but here's a decent picture of our new abode. Visitors welcome!!
John celebrated moving in by buying an "efficient" lawn mower... ie, no gas, no electricity, just good old human effort. Good thing he's perfectly happy to mow the lawn himself. :) He was actually really excited to get it, so excited he didn't even change out of his work clothes before trying it out. And getting the kids excited about mowing too... it's pretty cool, Calvin can about push it himself. A fact that will be exploited repeatedly in the future, I'm sure. Sunday, May 10, 2009
We're In!!

not yet...
I just reread "The Fire of the Covenant" by Gerald Lund and he mentions how people on the trail would get overwhelmed by "seeing the elephant" or looking at the 1500 mile journey across the continent all at once. I think that is what I am doing.
That book is a good one to read every so often to remind myself what our ancestors have done and sacrificed in being obedient to the Lord and gathering to Zion. While fighting thoughts of depression of being such a reprobate while having such an easy life, I am reminded that I have also covenanted to give my all for the kingdom, and wonder how well I am fulfilling that covenant. How well am I doing at being my brother's keeper? How well am I doing at being humble, selfless, and patient, and relying on the Lord? Not at all well, really. And while I know that perfection is nothing near attainable in this life, I do need to be at least moving forward on the trail.
The Willie company had one of their hardest climbs and most deaths after the rescue party came to them. Even though the Saints from the valley sent/brought food and clothing and helped where they could, the emigrant Saints still had to pick themselves up and continue on. Their climb up Rocky Ridge in subzero temperatures after a month or more of reduced rations was a horrible fight for them. And I ask myself, what is my Rocky Ridge? What is it, or will it be, that when all my strength, all of my temporal crutches are completely exhausted, will teach me to turn to the Lord and say, "I can't do this, I just can't on my own. Please help me." The thought frightens me, but also makes me want to try harder to be closer to the Lord now. The emigrant Saints could in full confidence turn to the Lord, for they knew they were doing His will. Can I say the same?
The other thing that struck me in reading this book was the quote at the beginning of one section from Elder Maxwell (I believe), that talked about how the Lord could have stayed the weather, he could have tempered the awful winter storms that hit the handcart companies, but the responsibility for caring for the Saints was on the shoulders of the Saints in the Valley. The Lord most often cares for his children through the hands of his children, that both the helped and the helpers may learn. Grand miracles were not needed. A lesson in charity, in faith, and in responsiblity was needed far more. We have covenanted to care for each other, to lift each other up. How often do I life my head up out of my daily activities, and open my eyes to the needs of others around me? I can say that I am a young mother, and have my hands full of fulfilling needs, but still my conscience is pricked and I have to admit that I do not do this as well as I should either.
More and more I am thinking that the experiences of those early Saints are as much for us as they were for them. Their trek across the continent is an analogy of our own lives. Can we face them, and continue pushing on, with the same faith and courage that they demonstrated?
